Mariner’s Mile
The Key to Newport Beach’s Future Character?
Mariner’s Mile is one of the most heavily travelled routes in Newport Beach and an area which characterizes the City in the minds of many. It has been the topic of study several times in past years, each time resulting in small degrees of change taking place. Yet the area struggles to establish a unique identity in the City and remains a juxtaposition of old beach town character and modern development concepts.
Most recently, the Newport Beach City Council authorized a new study of the area that is now available for open discussion—a concept that includes changes to PCH—adding bike lanes, removing parking and widening it; re‐routing Avon Street to allow for better traffic flow through the area; and creating a pedestrian‐oriented commercial village off of the highway.
Should the height limit of the buildings in Mariner’s Mile be increased? Should more space be left between the buildings in order to open windows to the bay? Should parking structures be added? Should road patterns be altered or increased in size? What authority does the California Coastal Commission have over Mariner’s Mile? All of these questions will be addressed in the new City plan.
City staff will share the newest planning concepts for Mariner’s Mile. The audience will be invited to make comment and ask questions. Come to learn and share your thoughts.
